found films

i'm baaacckkkkk. it's been such a wonderful week & i can hardly believe how the time has flown by. i'll be spending some more time reflecting on the week & on the year, but for now - let's talk movies. i saw three fantastic ones over my break & i still can't pick a favorite.

a single man - tom ford's directorial debut. the film was depressing, gorgeous, & sexy - i'm still dreaming about julianne moore's dress, colin firth's suits & the amazing colors. see the trailer here & if you're in seattle, see the movie at harvard exit.

up in the air - the oh so popular clooney movie. this was another gorgeous movie that's story pulls at your heartstrings & makes you think about love & just how much weight you carry in your backpack. see the trailer here.

an education - co-written by nick hornby. a dream about lust, romance, trust & of course - an education. it will make you want to visit paris and fantasize about seeing the whole world with deep pockets. see the trailer here.

found goodness

still dottie found goodness - 101 cookbooks

still dottie found goodness - 101 cookbooks

this weekend was filled with goodness. here it is, in list form.

sunburst carrot salad
from 101 cookbooks, my first experience with carrot ribbons.

a simple spring salad from 101 cookbooks, my first experience roasting beets & peeling blood oranges. it was such a colorful time prepping this one.

sweet & savory quiche, stina is magic. she modified the recipe slighty & it was killer. "i made more bread cubes for the crust, blended that cubes into bread crumbs with some spent grains from beer to make it a little more dense and chose to use sweet ham. oh, and i used 1 cup of 1% milk and 1/2 cup of half and half to cut some of the fat." you have to be registered member to get the full recipe, but i have it in email format, feel free to email me for it.

vicky cristina barcelona, more than just eye candy. i thought it was beautiful, funny, sexy & paced perfectly.

medicine for melancholy

medicine for melancholy

i went to see medicine for melancholy last night at the northwest film forum. the movie, directed by barry jenkins, is dialogue heavy, for sure, as it follows two african american 20somethings the morning after in san francisco. i thought it was stunning & capturing. everything from the cinematography (high saturation with a fantastic color correction in post production) to the music, the acting to the conversation - it had me.

we were lucky enough to have jenkins at the show with us & had the chance for q&a following the film. read paul constant's review at the stranger & see the trailer here - i encourage all of you to see it, go - go now & see it. it's here til monday.

let the right one in

i went down to see let the right one in last night (it'll will be a short stint at the varsity theater here in seattle). this swedish film is a story about coming of age, first loves & vampires - to put it simply. paul constant has a perfect review over at the stranger saying, "(it) can become a film about all kinds of things: the weird sexuality of burgeoning adolescents, how anger and violence can sometimes be a perfectly reasonable response in the proper situation, and how love is always completely, seriously fucked-up."

i thought it could have been scarier, but the subtlety was perfect & it seems to have led to late night conversations about humanity for some.

margaret kilgallen

i still haven't seen beautiful losers. it makes me tear up just a little, but i've tried & i can't find showings in seattle, the closest one looks to be in portland. hmmm, maybe i'll hop on the train. i have read a lot of reviews, seen the trailer & read up on many of the featured artists. this is where today's post falls in.

from gallery shows to graffiti art & murals under the tag name of meta or matokie slaughter, margaret kilgallen's work was strongly influenced by american folk art & hand painted signs. she often worked with gouache & acrylic on found paper; her palettes were warm & inviting.

based out of san francisco, kilgallen died in 2001 of complications from breast cancer at an early age of 33.

john waters

in honor of all things tacky & lovely - this is where i'll be tonight - john waters at benaroya hall. i grew up on hairspray, saw polyester way too young & just put desperate living on my netflix per my brother's recommendation (as an example of how tacky & horrifying it can get).

isn't this a great pic by dudley reed, found via whorange.

a night of make believe

my apartment was dimly lit, the little light there was provided by the white christmas lights in my window. i put on my warmest sweater, riding boots & my new snowboarding jacket in preparation for the night. it started off at six arms with natalie & stina to get ourselves hot liquored bevs; my drink of choice: mcmenamin's coffee (whiskey, frangelico & coffee). imagine our surprise when santa walked into the bar! we all got a little giddy it seemed; i pulled out my camera to snap pics & he gave natalie her requested candy cane. divya showed up & we headed down to the meridian 16 to watch enchanted. the movie was sweet, entertaining, funny & incredibly ridiculous. although, i found myself being a cynic: "how'd he learn to dance," "why is he following her around," "why would she forgive him for supposedly cheating just because he had 2 doves fly her a heart wreath of flowers." overall the movie was pretty good (i imagine it would be even better if i was a 10 year old girl who dreams of being a princess) & the night of make believe was even better!
