margaret kilgallen

i still haven't seen beautiful losers. it makes me tear up just a little, but i've tried & i can't find showings in seattle, the closest one looks to be in portland. hmmm, maybe i'll hop on the train. i have read a lot of reviews, seen the trailer & read up on many of the featured artists. this is where today's post falls in.

from gallery shows to graffiti art & murals under the tag name of meta or matokie slaughter, margaret kilgallen's work was strongly influenced by american folk art & hand painted signs. she often worked with gouache & acrylic on found paper; her palettes were warm & inviting.

based out of san francisco, kilgallen died in 2001 of complications from breast cancer at an early age of 33.

Thanks for showing these! Very cool, and I'd never heard of her before.

One of my absolute favorite artists! She and Barry McGee were also featured in PBS's Art21 series. I was heartsick when I heard about her passing just shortly after giving birth to her only child. She is missed sorely by the art community.
